During the The Shiseido Karakusa: Original Designs & Drawings (2019) an installation was exhibited at the Shiseido office building in Ginza, produced under the theme of "a new karakusa,"
The concept is based on the origin of the name "Shiseido," which comes from the phrase "Praise the virtues of the Earth, which nurtures new life and brings forth significant values" in Chinese Yi Jing, the Book of Changes from the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism. The digital image installation 《Photosynthesis》 generates karakusa by using parameters of environmental changes (sunlight exposure, rainfall, CO2 emission, urban traffic.) The physical installation 《再生樹 Re-Tree》 recycles paper waste from product packaging production to and utilizes them again as tree objects, thus depicting a "forest of Banbutsu-shisei (from which all life and values spring)."
The karakusa in the digital animation is a reenactment of a plant's growth blessed by nature's offerings. At the same time, it also signifies the increasing concentration of C02 emission and human-factor-impact on the environment. We wanted to highlight reuse and re-vitalizing of what humans may consider as being useless. This was a declaration to taken on challenges for a more sustainable society. as well as showing our reverence for nature.
